July 12, 2015 -

The theme for Summer Camp Week #4 was “Magical Kingdom.”  The campers enjoyed In-house field trips from Color Me Mine Art Studio and Gymstrada.  The PreK’s paintEd fairies and frogs and had “Alice the Fairy” read to them by Ms. Wendy from Color Me Mine.  Our art with Mrs. Loper was very special.  This week campers made Wizard Hats and toilet paper roll Gnomes and Fire Breathing Dragons.  Water Fun was on Thursday. We ended the week creating Ice Cream Sundaes for our cooking project.  We are having a great time making new friends during the “Dog Days of Summer”.  The campers enjoyed bowling.  Check out the garden and our picture boards.

July, 5 2015 -

The theme for Summer Camp Week #3 was “God Bless America.”  The campers were very patriotic this week in honor of Independence Day.  Campers painted ‘fireworks’ with Queen Anne’s lace flowers.  The red, white and blue was everywhere in the building.  We played Miniature Golf in Belvedere Hall on Wednesday.  Campers slipped and slid on Water Fun day.  We celebrated the 4th of July with a cookout.  Mr. Sontag did the grilling.  The children sang patriotic songs.  A great week was had by all.  To our military families – Thank You for your service.  God Bless You!

June 28, 2015 -

The theme for Summer Camp Week #2 was “Sowing the Seeds.”

The campers planted the summer garden with Mr. Sontag.  The camp’s In-House Field Trips this week were Gymstrada and Virginia Living Museums’ “Traveling Road Show” with lots of reptiles.  We ended the week with Water Fun and in honor of camp we microwaved S’mores.  Assistant Director Linda Loper had the campers planting seeds and painting with colored rice.  Except for the terrible heat, we had a wonderful fun week.  Check out our art and picture boards.


June 21, 2015 -

Summer Camp 2015 welcomed 31 campers to Week#1. 

Our wonderful staff had a “World of Adventures” with the children during our first week.  The theme this week is “Fun with Animals.”  The campers made fans to keep cool in the 100o temperatures.   Water Fun Day was a big splash with the campers.  We ended the week cooking animal face pizzas for lunch.  Staff and campers had a super fun week.  Check out our camp picture.


Trinity Lutheran School received $675 from Target through their #ThanksaBillion teacher appreciation program!  $25 was donated to the school for every 'thank you' submitted on Target's website!

June 14, 2015 -

On Friday, the last day of the school year, students and faculty gathered for all-school chapel.  Summer Camp begins on Monday, June 15, a popular program led by Mrs. Christy Sontag.

Parent-teacher conferences were held on Monday on an optional basis.  The teachers were treated to Mexican lunch. Tuesday - An outing to the Virginia Zoo was taken by the entire student body, along with teachers and parents.

In the evening, fifth grade graduation was held in the sanctuary, followed by a reception in Belvedere Hall.  Thank you to Chaplain Prince for assisting Mrs. Sykes and offering prayer. Wednesday – PTLS sponsored Water Play Field Day, an annual event that is greatly enjoyed. Thursday – The staff met for lunch (potatoes/vegetables from the school’s community garden) and sharing of ideas with school board and church council representatives.

June 7, 2015 -

The annual all-school musical program was held on Thursday evening in Belvedere Hall and was a rousing success.  Thanks to Ms. Sharon Plawin and Mrs. Johanna Bradley for producing the event.  Trinity’s students were the stars.

SCIENCE – Third grade students are studying hurricanes and the impact they have on our local weather at this time of year.  In fourth and fifth grades the solar system is being studied. SOCIAL STUDIES – The Civil War, Women’s Movement and temperance movement are all being explored by fourth and fifth grade students.

GRADUATION – You are invited to attend fifth grade graduation on Tuesday, June 9, 7 p.m. and witness this milestone event for our young people.  The service will take place in the sanctuary.


May 31, 2015 -

All students were treated to a slice of “Auf Wiedersehen” cake following chapel on Wednesday, a tribute to Mrs. Jane Miller’s (chapel leader and German teacher) move to Wisconsin.

Third grade students have enjoyed learning about outer space and exploration in science lessons. 

First and second grade students took a hiking trip to First Landing State Park last week. Fourth and fifth grade students delighted in a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Thursday.

A wind-up week for after school activities – Art Club, Field Hockey, Gymstrada and Walking Club.


May 24, 2015 -

The Drama Club students gave their spring production of “I’m in the Lord’s Army” on Wednesday and Thursday. 

Social Studies – Kindergarten students are completing a unit about jobs. 

Third grade students are looking at the Civil Rights movement in our country. 

Study of the end of the War of 1812 up to the eve of the Civil War is being reviewed in fourth and fifth grade. 

The one mile run was held at Granby High School by students in grades 1-5, a prerequisite for the Presidential Physical Fitness Program. 

Art Show Material – spring flower paintings in PK – sunflowers with seeds – paintings in the style of Georgia O’Keefe – paper plate crabs – tissue flowers – bring on the judges!

May 17, 2015 -

Chaplain Prince used the military salute to advantage in stressing the fourth commandment, to honor your father and your mother, during chapel this week.

PTLS held its biggest fundraiser of the school year on Friday, The Beach Party Silent Auction.  Thank you for your support.

In Math the 3rd grade students are naming fractions, finding equivalent fractions and comparing and ordering fractions.  Language Arts - Third grade students are reading How to Eat Fried Worms and learning the trouble with making bets with someone.

Fourth and fifth graders are studying about the early Presidents of the U.S. in Social Studies.


May 10, 2015 -

First grade students have enjoyed seeing images of their creation, known as Flat Stanley, who has traveled with parents and friends throughout the USA.  The latest – Flat Stanley flew aboard an F 15 Eagle to Europe; one was seen in Guam.

In German classes, children are learning about farm and wild animals.

Students and teachers gathered at the flag pole on Thursday to pray and observe National Day of Prayer.

First and second grade students went to the Children’s Museum of Virginia on Friday, followed by a picnic lunch and tour of Fire Station 12 with Captain Giddens.

May 3, 2015 -

Student illustrations to accompany assignments are on display throughout the educational wing.  Can you find the ones with doggy treats? (hint - Think Milk-bone.) 

SCIENCE – Kindergarten students are learning about energy.  Third grade emphasis is on protecting our natural resources and soil.  Fourth and fifth grade - changes and movement of our planet.  MATH  –  Skip counting in kindergarten – identifying angles of triangles in third grade (Angle Pals bendable art) – finding lines of symmetry in fourth grade– investigating fractional concepts – adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators in fifth grade.

 


April 26, 2015 -

Students have eased into the use of new tablets in their classrooms, thanks to the technology update throughout the building.

Standardized Achievement Testing took place this week for Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students, an annual evaluation.

SCIENCE – study of landforms in 3rd grade, Earth Science in 4th and 5th grades.  EARTH DAY and ways to protect our planet were emphasized in all grades.  FIELD TRIPS to Hunt Club Farm to learn about plants and animals as well as Virginia International Tattoo for sheer enjoyment!

April 19, 2015 -

Two Open Houses for the school will be held this week - Thursday, April 23, 5:00 - 7:00 pm and Saturday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.  PLEASE come out and support Trinity's #1 mission!!  Check out the facilities and meet the teachers!  Pick up a flyer in the Welcome Center to share with a friend!

New technology was installed over spring break:  new PC's for the lab, larger monitors, tablets for the classrooms, and WIFI throughout the building, including the sanctuary!  3rd, 4th, and 5th graders visited Province Place of DePaul and played games and sang songs with the residents.  Potatoes planted in March are beginning to sprout in the Community Garden!

The chapel message this week centered on Christ’s glorious Resurrection!

SCIENCE – Fourth and fifth grade students are learning about electricity.  Kindergarten students studied the life cycle of a chicken, then made a cute chick-in-a-half-shell craft.

MATH – Geometry is the emphasis in third grade – solid figures, lines, points, angles.  It is the study of fractions in fifth grade – estimating, finding fractions and mixed numbers on a number line, understanding equivalent fractions

EASTER ART was evident throughout the educational wing – Jesus died for me – watercolor eggs, paintings inspired by artist Georgia O’Keeffe, tissue flower art, finger painted eggs, and Ukrainian Pysanki eggs.


March 29, 2015 -

In school-wide chapel, Pastor Wes Gehrke talked about the events of Palm Sunday.

Kindergarten students are learning about our country’s monuments as part of SOCIAL STUDIES.  Third grade students are studying exploration by the Portuguese.  For fourth and fifth grade students the emphasis is on exploration by the Spanish, including Columbus and Magellan. 

With Mr. Bill Sontag’s help, every student planted potatoes eyes in Trinity’s Community Garden.

FIELD TRIPS – PK students went to the Children’s Museum; 3rd, 4th and 5th went to the Air and Space Museum.

March 22, 2015 -

While in chapel, students saw large screen TV pictures taken in Nepal by Kim Clifton (Mrs. Miller’s daughter) on her recent mission trip to further the work of 4The1.

Did you see it?  There is a new, attractive awning over the main school entrance, thanks to PTLS. 

Mrs. Melissa Hales has returned from student teaching in her efforts to obtain a Masters Degree in Special Education.  A “welcome back” banner is on display over the 1st grade hallway bulletin board.  Mrs. Bobbi Gillooly did a superb job teaching 1st and 2nd grades during the interim.

Staff Appreciation Lunch was held on Friday, March 20, always a delicious treat.  THANK YOU TO PARENTS FOR THIS ANNUAL EVENT.

Everything green on St. Patrick’s Day – lunch, watercolor shamrocks, Cheerios rainbows with marshmallow clouds – and more!

 


March 15, 2015 -

Did you see Gopher, the bright blue, blow-up octopus on the front lawn with PK-3 students and Mrs. Blaker in pursuit?  Mild weather days provided a great opportunity for the students to observe and identify, then recreate in art form, the cloud formations above TLS.

SCIENCE – Third grade students began a unit on Earth Science.  SOCIAL STUDIES – Causes of the American Revolution (4th grade), Age of Exploration and scientific advancements making it possible (3rd grade)

MONTHLY AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – Basketball (It must be March Madness!) on Monday, Drama Club on Tuesday, Tutor Time on Wednesday, and Art Club on Thursday.


March 8, 2015 -

Returning to school schedules following the BIG snow storm, was welcomed by teachers, staff and most students.

MATH - Fourth & Fifth grades are working on Geometry.  SCIENCE - A unit on sound is being studied in third grade.  GERMAN - Body parts and household items are being mastered by all students. LANGUAGE ARTS -"What will the weather be?" (Kindergarten) "Darnell Rock Reporting"- differing views on the use of old basketball court resulting in written reports to the City Council and TLS responses (fifth grade), "Storm in the Night - grandfather and grandson discuss validity of fear (third grade).

The birthday od Dr. Seuss was noted on Monday, thanks too, to Mrs. Loper for the Cat in the Hat lunch.

February 15, 2015 -

The 100th day of school was celebrated in the early childhood department in creative ways to emphasize that ten groups of ten = 100.

President Abraham Lincoln’s life and service to our country was noted on his birthday, Feb. 12. Valentine’s Day parties were held on Friday, preceded by art projects and card exchanges.

ODU dental health students visited Trinity’s classes, demonstrating good dental health and its benefits.

LANGUAGE ARTS – “We Were There, Too!” is being read by 5th grade students, the story of the role played by a boy and girl in the Revolutionary War.  SOCIAL STUDIES – 3rd grade studying country of Mali, 4th and 5th studying events prior to the American Revolution.


February 8, 2015 -

Students enjoy many after-school activities at TLS:  Basketball on Mondays with Seniors from Norfolk Christian, Gymstrada on Tuesdays with all sorts of equipment, and Tutor time on Wednesdays with Granby High School students. Drama Club and Girls' Field Hockey will begin in March.

PTLS Karaoke Night was a huge success last Friday; another Parents' Night Out is planned for February 13th.  The PTLS is also replacing the awning outside the school entrance to the building.

Enrollment for the 2015-16 school year is open.


February 1, 2015 -

Students had a great time during Lutheran Schools Week – Spirit Day with kick-off Pep Rally, PJ Day with pillow fights, Furry Friend Day with Norfolk Christian 6th graders playing with us, Sock Day with special show-n-tell items, and Freaky Friday, where even the pizza was weird!

Enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year has begun; please share one of the cards in the Welcome Center with associates, friends and family who have school age children!

January 25, 2015 -

Pastor Froehlich’s chapel message to the children focused on prayer and the awareness that we can always talk with God.

SOCIAL STUDIES – 4th and 5th grade students are studying the establishment of the British Colonies.  The subject for kindergarten students is Maps and Globes.  MATH – Review time – value of dime, nickel and penny, time on the hour, and a unit on number words for kindergarten.  LANGUAGE ARTS – First and 2nd grade students write spelling words twice, compose five sentences using different spelling words, culminating in a spelling test at the end of each week!

Third grade is currently reading Halmoni and the Picnic about a girl who is embarrassed by her Korean grandmother (speech, clothing and choice of picnic food). A great opportunity to explore cultural differences.

COMING ATTRACTION – Lutheran Schools Week – January 26-February 1.

January 18th, 2015 -

Two new students were enrolled and welcomed in January 2015, one in preschool and the other in 5th grade.  Re-enrollment for school year 2015-16 begins this month.

Due to extreme cold this past week, recess was held indoors.  Appropriately, students are concentrating on how to stay healthy, along with a study of diseases.  Kindergarten pupils are writing and illustrating a winter book.  Preschool students painted pictures of their Christmas vacation activities.

MATH – Multiplication and its meaning, using arrays, writing multiplication stories in 3rd grade. - Multiplying by 10, 100 or 1,000 in 4th grade - Collecting data using surveys and making graphs in 5th grade.  GERMAN – Kitchen words (Hot chocolate, anyone?)


December 21, 2014 -

All students of the school employed music and drama to portray the true “Reason for the Season” message of Christmas on Tuesday night in Belvedere Hall.

First and second grade students enjoyed wearing pajamas to school as part of Polar Express Day.  Clad in Christmas colors, third, fourth and fifth grade students caroled to residents of Province Place. Needs and Wants were explored in Kindergarten as part of Social Studies. Classroom parties were the norm on Friday, the last day of school until January!  A special jolly, bearded fellow wearing a red suit and carrying a pack of toys, visited early childhood classrooms.

December 14, 2014 -

In Chapel, kindergarten students helped Mrs. Joella deliver the message of John the Baptist, “prepare your heart” and “repent”.

 

 All students of the school will present the message of Christ’s birth via songs and recitations on Tuesday, December 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Belvedere Hall.

 

Spelling words and bible memory verses are a reflection of the Advent and Christmas season.

 

 Excitement is mounting during the last full week of school (before break) for students AND faculty.

December 7, 2014 -

Students and parents enjoyed participating in Trinity’s Chrismon Event on Friday.  There were hayrides, hot dogs and marshmallows to roast, hot chocolate, cider, creative games of snowballs and ice hockey, AND a Vendor/Craft Fair.

Students prepared stockings that were mysteriously filled with candy, an ancient custom for Nikolaus Abend Day, December 6.  Students learned about St. Nikolaus, a fourth century bishop known for kindness and generosity, in German classes.

MATH – 3rd and 4th grade students are telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour as well as elapsed time.  5th grade students have learned divisibility rules and how to find the factors of a number.


November 30, 2014 -

Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders rode a big white bus to Norfolk Collegiate Lower School to participate in a Science Lab on Tuesday.

First and Second graders made Native American dwellings out of some very creative materials - check them out in the Welcome Center.

Pastor Dan gave his last chapel message at Wednesday's Thanksgiving chapel; students sang Go Now in Peace to him.

November 23, 2014 -

Last night’s downtown Grand Illumination Parade included Trinity Lutheran School’s portrayal of the nativity on its float.  THANK YOU to school and church parents for working to make this a reality.  GREAT JOB!

Operation Barnabas offered child care to school parents on Friday night.

HEALTH – various diseases and actions to stay healthy.  SOCIAL STUDIES – 3rd grade has begun a unit on Rome, studying its geography, economy, history, government and culture – 4th and 5th grade students are focused on the rainforest habitat and its multiple layers in their study of the environment.  They are also looking at events leading up to 1492 in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Thanksgiving art was evident in the classrooms and hallways.  Kindergarten students related Pilgrims leaving England to their arrival in America via study of a time line in Math.

November 16, 2014 -

Early childhood students are learning basic computer skills, such as cut-and-paste as well as click and drag, employing the software Kid Pix.

SCIENCE – how organisms cope (or don’t) with changes in the environment – application of lessons learned studying genetics to adaptation – behavior or sounds determine names such as “swarm of bees” – “school of fish” – “kettle of hawks” – “gaggle of geese”.  GERMAN – mastery of calendar names, such as days of the week, name of months

Did you know?  Volunteer Errol Jennings has become the school’s parking lot greeter and can often be found in the church/school office folding church bulletins, etc.  THANK YOU Errol!!


November 9, 2014 -

MATH – 4th grade students are evaluating expressions and solving addition and subtraction equations – 5th grade Algebra using variables and expressions, translating words to expressions, finding a rule and solving equations.  LANGUAGE ARTS – K -“How the Birds Got Their Colors” with emphasis on nouns and verbs – 3rd - “Community Ties” with concentration on singular and plural nouns – 4th – “Why Frog and Snake Never Play Together” with lessons about friendship and liking people who are different from us

Orders for Fun Pasta are being taken by PTLS until Nov. 14; envelopes with order forms are in the Welcome Center.


November 2, 2014 -

In chapel, the message from Pastor Wes Gehrke was that, as Christians, all people are saints.

The annual Family Bible Story Pumpkins were highly creative and delightful to view.  Thanks to 1st grade students and parents for their efforts.

Kindergarten students have begun a unit of sudy of the sun.  Third grade students are studying architecture, language, daily life and mythology in Social Studies. Fourth and Fifth grade focus has been on Eastern Woodland and Plains Indians.

Early Childhood students took the opportunity to climb aboard the fire truck that visited Trinity on Thursday and watch the firefighters work with their gear.

The Fall Harvest/Halloween celebration on Friday began with a parade of costumed children through Belvedere Hall, followed by classroom parties.

October 26, 2014 -

Thank you to school families for celebrating the Christian Reformation with us.

SCIENCE – impact of weather – hibernation and how bears prepare genetics/ inheritance activities – adaptations – turning gourds into creatures.  HEALTH – respiratory system.  MATH – use of Venn diagrams – making bar graphs.

Trinity families are invited to bring cans of green beans to a collection box in Belvedere Hall, our contribution to Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving Food Drive.  The deadline is November 17th.


October 19th, 2014 -

German teacher and chapel leader Jane Miller, was recognized for 45 years of faithful service at the recent Southeastern District Lutheran Educators Conference in North Carolina.

As part of Fire Safety Month, students are reviewing Stop-Drop-Roll, watching safety videos, and listening carefully to advice from Fireman Paul Giddens, alumni-parent fireman, who visited classrooms. 

MATH – patterns, pennies, telling time on the hour, things that are equal – all being studied in Kindergarten – evaluating expressions and solving addition and subtracting equations in 4th grade.


October 12, 2014 -

While strolling through the hallways of Trinity Lutheran School, the aroma of cooking apples, thanks to Kindergarten students, greeted everyone, part of a SCIENCE lesson.  Third through Fifth grade students, clad in TLS shirts, were seen walking toward Province Place, where they interact with the residents as part of SOCIAL STUDIES.

Three year old pupils are mastering cutting skills and distinguishing between items that are “same” and “different.”  First grade students made straw skeletons and labeled the body parts (on display outside the classroom).

Thank you notes were written to the 6th grade students from Norfolk Christian who visited TLS and assisted with Science lessons.
